Retail Commerce

Start anywhere, finish anywhere — one shop across counter and screen.

Retail Commerce is the solution shape for merchants who sell in physical space as well as online and want the two to behave as one business. The customer should be able to start anywhere and finish anywhere — browse online and collect in store, buy in store and have it shipped home, reserve an item and pay on arrival, return an online order at any counter — while you run every location and the online store off one inventory truth, one catalogue, and one customer record. It is the physical-retail sibling of Seamless Commerce: the same unified-business idea, brought down to the shop floor.

The honest, and genuinely useful, starting point is that most of these moves are already native on Shopify POS Pro, on the same inventory and order model your online store uses. Ship-from-store, buy-online-pickup-in-store, buy-in-store-ship-to-customer, and cross-location returns are POS Pro features, not a stack of apps we have to assemble — so a large part of omnichannel retail is enabling and configuring what Shopify already ships, not building it. The two moves that quietly are not native are item reservation and booked-slot click and collect; for those we reach for a proven scheduling app rather than rebuild the logic.

Custom work lives where retail meets the back office, not in the POS moves themselves. If your authoritative available-to-sell number lives in an ERP or warehouse system rather than Shopify, that figure has to be reconciled before POS and the storefront commit it — the same event-driven sync and nightly reconciliation discipline our integration work is built on. Bespoke in-store flows, such as clienteling or store-specific receipts, can be added as POS UI extensions on top.

This is honest capability, not a measured track record: we have not yet delivered a named retail or POS engagement, so there are no in-store metrics to cite. What we can stand behind is that these moves are native Shopify POS Pro capability layered on the multi-location inventory and integration work we already do. We frame fewer lost sales, cleaner stock accuracy, and a smoother counter as the expected outcomes of removing the gap between channels — never as numbers we have already measured for you. The one requirement worth flagging early: the omnichannel moves need Shopify POS Pro, so a Lite or Starter store cannot deliver this scope.

Definition

Retail Commerce is for merchants who sell in physical space and online and want the two to behave as one business. Customers buy online and collect in store, buy in store and ship home, return anywhere, or order an item the shop does not hold — while every location and the online store run off one inventory truth, one catalogue, and one customer record.

How we deliver it

  1. 01

Map the locations and the system of record

We list every location, name which fulfilment moves each one offers, and settle the one question retail programmes stall on: which system owns the available-to-sell number. If stock also lives in an ERP or warehouse, that ownership is decided before any configuration begins.

  2. 02

Enable the native POS Pro layer

Most omnichannel retail moves are native on Shopify POS Pro, on the same inventory and order model the online store already uses. Click and collect, ship-from-store, ship-to-customer endless aisle, cross-location returns, and order routing across locations are configured first — this is setup, not a custom build.

  3. 03

Add apps where native stops, integrate the back office

Two moves are not native — booked-slot pickup and item reservation — so we add a proven scheduling app rather than rebuild slot logic. Where stock truth lives in an external ERP, OMS, or WMS, we connect it with the same event-driven sync and reconciliation pattern Apps & integrations owns.

  4. 04

    Sustain past launch

Return rules, order-routing preferences, and any bespoke in-store logic are a live surface, not a one-time switch. We keep them correct as locations and policy change by moving ongoing cover into Hypercare.

Questions, answered

Can my staff fulfil online orders from the shop floor?

Yes, natively on Shopify POS Pro. Ship-from-store lets store staff pick, pack, buy and print a label, and ship an online order from the store's own stock — without ever opening the admin.

A customer wants something we do not have in this store — can we still sell it?

Yes. POS Pro's ship-to-customer move lets you take payment in store and have the item shipped from another location or your warehouse. It is the endless-aisle pattern, so a walk-in rarely has to leave empty-handed.

Can people collect online orders in store and return online orders at the till?

Both are native on POS Pro. Buy-online-pickup-in-store handles collection, and cross-location returns let any store accept a return or exchange for an order placed online or at another store, governed by your own return rules.

Can customers reserve an item or book a specific pickup time?

Not with Shopify's native pickup, which has no time-slots or reservation booking. We add a proven scheduling app for that rather than rebuild it — a known, supported pattern, just not something the platform ships natively.
